Teams & Organisations
Counselling & Psychotherapy
(Eye Movement & Reprocessing)
I provide systemic consultation to teams and organisations which are experiencing stuckness or negativity of one kind or another. I have experience of working with teams around issues of:
- Perceived power imbalances
- Low team morale
- Inter-team relationship difficulties
- Teams in transition or undergoing a process of organisational change
I aim to help organisations to value the strengths of individuals and to develop creative thinking and effective communication.
I can work in a variety of ways to suit the needs of the organisation. These include:
- Consultation to managers
- Small and/or large group consultation to teams
- Individual sessions
- Assessment only or assessment and intervention
- Short-term intensive intervention or longer-term maintenance programme
My practice is based on systemic psychotherapy. This is a relationship-based therapy. It means that whether I am working with an individual, couple, or group I aim to help people explore themselves in relationship to others.
This will mean exploring their relationships with other people, but may also involve exploring their relationship to their own beliefs, behaviours, culture and environment. I work on the assumption that our beliefs, behaviours and relationships are inextricably intertwined.
My style is conversational and I ask questions designed to help people think through their concerns. Whilst my approach is largely based upon talking I do, at times, use other mediums to explore issues that might be difficult to talk about. This may involve the use of art materials, story or play.
In working with children I make the sessions playful where possible and accessible to their level of understanding. Depending upon individual need I can offer a short-term intervention focusing on a specific issue, or longer-term, more exploratory intervention.
EMDR is a means of assisting the brain to reprocess disturbing thoughts and memories that are causing an individual to experience problems in their day to day life.
In the UK EMDR is recommended as the treatment of choice for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and by the CREST report in Northern Ireland.
The distressing effects of trauma (such as flashbacks, disturbing thoughts and negative feelings) can be alleviated by stimulating the eye movements of an individual while they focus on the traumatic event.
EMDR treatment may involve either the stimulation of eye movements, or the tapping of alternate ides of the body. It is the alternate stimulation of each side of the brain (bi-lateral stimulation), rather than eye movements specifically, that produces the therapeutic effect. Since its beginnings EMDR has evolved into a treatment for a wide range of emotional problems including:
- Panic attacks
- Anger problems
- Treating the affects of childhood neglect and abuse
- Performance anxiety
- Obsessive compulsive disorders
- Low self-esteem
- Relationship and sexual problems
It is also used as an effective performance enhancer in both sports and the arts.
I am a qualified and experienced systemic psychotherapist. I am registered with the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists UKCP and am a Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy MBACP.
I have 10 years experience of working with individuals, couples, and families to help them face and address the difficulties that affect their lives. I have worked in both adult and child mental health services and have experience of helping clients with a wide range of difficulties including:
- Low self-esteem
- Eating disorders
- Relationship difficulties
- Self harm
- Effects of trauma
- Effects of childhood abuse
- Abuse in families
- School refusal
- Family breakdown
- Child behaviour problems
- Families in transition
- Marital difficulties
- Sexual problems
- Domestic violence
- Concerns about children
And many more…
I have regular supervision and keep my practice and thinking up to date by attending training courses, conferences, and workshops.
